Hello All, I’ve been a bit busy to get to the blog for quite sometime, but I’m back now.
We had a Fantastic 6 week trip to Papua New Guniea with Max & Loraine , Kathy & Alan. From late Feb to early April. we travelled nearlly 4000 nautical miles , Fantastic fishing, what a place to see. We’re gearing up for a Great light tackle season , with it getting cold quicky ( by Cairns standards) the mackeral & small marlin will soon be biting their heads off. They have had a bit of a showing which should go nuts in the next few weeks & months. We have a fair bit of room for light tackle trip’s until September then a little bit of Prime time for Heavy tackle still open in November. Some of the most under rated month of all, December , still has has room also. For the Barra enthusists, Next year , April & May I’ll have the boat in Weipa for 5, 7 & 10 day lure/fly Barra trips. This is an awsome place to catch an aray of inshore sportfish, not to mention the delicious Mud crabs. Let me know if you are up to it, I have some space but there will be a limited number of trip as Ill have to get back to Cairns to do the light tackle season.

Another fantastic heavy tackle fishing season is only a couple of months away, in the meantime, the 2008 light tackle season is already showing signs of good numbers of juvenille black marlin, sailfish and spanish mackeral. In November December 2007 the Moana crew caught lots of big fish over 1000 pounds, 2 in the 11-1200 range and one well in excess of 120 pounds.

Happy New Year!
We’ve been doing a few days light tackle & bottom fishing for Spanish mackeral, GT’s, Coral Trout etc. Weather has been mostly flat calm & warm. There is still some time to enjoy the reef before the wet gets into full swing. I’ve even had some time to take the kids Barramundi fishing.
We are currently organising our trip to PNG & sorting out bookings for the Heavy tackle season Sept - Dec. so if you want to be straped into the game chair with a monster Marlin on best you contact us now to reserve your time slot.

What an incredible season . The fishing wasn’t crash hot a lot of the time but we managed to find a few Real Big ones’ including weighing the biggest fish for the fleet @ 1140lb & we caught her on a lure as well, that’s 3 Grander Blacks on lures now, I’m liking lure fishing more & more. We also let at least 2 fish go that were substancially bigger again. While the edge was quite we slipped out wide into the Coral sea on a few occasions, most often being rewarded with incredible experiences. One of which included the 1140. A couple of times we found huge aggregations of Yellowfin & Bigeye tuna, swam with a couple of very big Whale sharks, had some fun with a pod of a dozen Pilot whales that we teased into the transom, caught a 450lb blue marlin, caught & saw many more huge sharks, including some very aggresive Oceanic white tips’. One day we were surrounded by a huge patch of whales, a bunch of massive Sperm whales, False killers, Humpbacks, Pilot whales & Whale sharks, an incredible site to see.
Late November & so far December has seen the return of storms at night, we haven’t had good storms like this , this time of year so maybe 15-18 yrs, maybe the weather pattern is cycling around….who knows.
The fish have been a little late & there are good numbers of Big fish out in front of Cairns right now & have been so for a couple of weeks now, only problem is i’m at home looking for fisherman to take out!!

Had a couple of days off , out again tomorrow. We have some days available over next few weeks & I expect the fishing to be Good. The season has been a little late . Late November & December I consider to be Excellent time to catch a Big Monster. So far this year we have caught 5 Granders, 2 of them on lure’s, (bring our Granders on lure’s tally to 3). We weighed one of the smaller ones 1140lb. Several fishing from 600-950lb. & bunches of samller ones, 500lb & less. Drop me a line if you want to come & play with the Big ones.

Welcome to the Big Fish Down Under News page.
September was an interesting month to say the least. We spent most of the month light tackle fishing for juvenile black marlin , sailfish & Spanish mackerel. Some of the highlight’s included competing in the Hinchinbrook & Innisfail 6kg tournaments with OK results. The fishing was fairly quite but the one’s caught were huge for 6kg, normally the fish are 10-20kg, not this year they were all 40-80kg (80-180lb) , On 12lb line you know your fishing with these animals going nuts on the other end. At Hinchinbrook the winning boat caught 3 fish, There was a few boats on 2 fish ( including us). Overall a Good competition with Great weather, we’ll be back next year .
Innisfail the following week was also a bit quite , we caught 2 marlin and almost got the tag into one about 500lb in just under a minute before he woke up & “smoked us” stripping 300 meters of 6kg line & water pressure was just to much, however we managed to get Runners up, another good comp, & we will be back there also.
